Currency, notes and currency exchange

The official Chinese currency is yuan, or RMB.
Please take some cash with you! Credit cards are accepted at most big Chinese stores and supermarkets, but not small shops. Coins are also handy, as many automatic vending machines take coins. The price level in Guangzhou is rather low compared to the West, so usually you'll get more for your money.

Food in China is very cheap. So is in Guangzhou. However a wide range of scales of restaurants and vendors can make the price a big difference. There are canteens on campus where you can get a meal around RMB10. Restaurants around campus will be generally cheaper than those in downtown. With RMB25-30/person and order in a group, you can get a big table of food and probably with lots of left-over when you finish. For a good meal you are going to have downtown, RMB100 can bring you a rather fine meal. Western and other styles of food are generally more expensive than local food.
